Sarasota finishes district play unbeaten
SARASOTA, Fla. – The Sarasota High baseball team completed an undefeated district regular season Tuesday night with a neat 2-0 victory over visiting North Port at Ronald K. Drews Field.
The Sailors went through Class 7A-District 10 at 8-0 and upped their overall record to 10-0 with their second straight shutout victory over the Bobcats.
Left-hander Zach McMullen started and worked the first two innings before winner Joey Cavallaro came out of the bullpen and finished.
The senior right-hander heading to the University of South Florida, Cavallaro permitted one hit over the final five innings. Mixing in his breaking pitches, he struck out four, including the final out of the game.
The Sailors scored the only runs of the game in the fifth inning. With one out McMullen walked and was sacrificed to second by Matt Schlabach. Mason Dancer drilled a stand-up triple down the right field line to plate McMullen. Dancer scored when Cody Brickhouse singled.
North Port starter Nathan Burke worked five innings allowing four hits and both runs. Andrew Steele struck out two in his only innings of work in relief.
Sarasota returns to action Wednesday night at home against Jacksonville Eagle’s View before hitting the road to play Venice on Friday. North Port (7-5; 4-3 in 7A-10) completes its regular season district schedule Friday at home against Braden River.
